Riverside Records: E-commerce & Local SEO Case Study

In the heart of Rotherham, housed within the stunning historical architecture of the Imperial Building, sits Riverside Records. It’s more than a shop; it’s a testament to passion and resilience.

The Origin Story

Riverside Records was born from the grit of South Yorkshire's history. Founded by two men facing redundancy from the steel industry, they decided to turn a challenging moment into an opportunity to follow their true passion: music.

Starting small, their dedication to vinyl culture saw them grow steadily, eventually securing their current residence in the iconic Imperial Building in Rotherham's city centre. They had built a physical sanctuary for music lovers and simultaneously developed a powerhouse presence on eBay, racking up over 7,000 successful sales.

"We didn't want a website that felt like a second job. We wanted something that celebrated what we’ve already built in Rotherham and on eBay, without adding complication." — The Riverside Team

The Challenge: Bridging Two Worlds

Riverside Records faced a unique "good problem." They had a thriving physical store and a highly successful eBay operation. However, these two worlds existed in isolation.

Local customers searching Google for "vinyl records in Rotherham" might miss them entirely. Conversely, online buyers had no sense of the beautiful physical shop that backed the eBay listings.

The goal was to create a professional digital storefront that reflected the quality of their physical location, drove local foot traffic, and improved their visibility on Google—all without disrupting the workflow that had already generated 7,000 sales.

The Strategy: Intelligence Over Brute Force

The easiest suggestion would have been to migrate them to a platform like Shopify. But that would have been the wrong strategic move.

Avoiding Friction

Moving to a new e-commerce platform would mean introducing new monthly subscriptions, learning complex new dashboards, and changing a daily process that already worked. We needed to respect their established workflow.

Leveraging Assets

Their "source of truth" was eBay. Why reinvent the wheel? We decided to build a custom integration that treated their eBay store as the inventory engine, pulling data they had already painstakingly entered.

Owning the Search

eBay is great for selling, but it doesn't help Riverside Records rank on Google for specific items locally. We needed a solution that gave every single record its own spotlight on the web.

The Solution in Action

We built a bespoke platform using modern web technologies geared towards speed and search engine visibility. The result is a website that looks beautiful and works incredibly hard in the background.

The "Zero-Touch" Inventory System

By integrating directly with the eBay API, the website's inventory is perpetually synchronized with their actual stock. When a rare press sells on eBay at 3 AM, it automatically disappears from the website. The owners never have to update stock in two places. It just works.

SEO That Drives Local Footfall

Using advanced build strategies (via Astro), we ensure that every single record in their inventory gets its own dedicated, fast-loading page on the internet. This means when a local collector Googles a specific Bowie album, they find Riverside Records—not just a generic eBay listing—encouraging them to visit the Imperial Building in person.

A Digital Storefront Worthy of the Imperial Building

Speed equals professionalism. The new site is blazing fast. It provides a premium browsing experience that reflects the history and quality of their physical location, building immediate trust with new online visitors.

The Result

Riverside Records now possesses a modern digital ecosystem that honors their roots. It connects their past success in the steel city with the future of digital commerce, all without adding friction to their daily lives. They can focus on what they love—curating great music—while their website handles the rest.
